NOTHIN’ BUT A PINCH
The images in this series criticize a dysfunctional medical system that still undermines the autonomy of women, a system that all too often disregards the pain and discomfort experienced by the female body when diagnosed within a medical, and more broadly spanning, societal context.
Based on personal experiences and first-hand accounts from friends and family members, each piece in this series satirically illuminates the issues we face when navigating a world of medicine guilty of systemically downplaying, disregarding, or 'fixing' through brute force, health issues which are extremely common.
Everyone is obsessed with ____ until it comes to fixing it.
The incorporation of vintage ads in the pieces utilizes the clichés and gender stereotypes propagated therein to create a satirical dialogue between the subjects being criticized and the absurdity of their hyper-happy aesthetic in this new format.
This series represents the female experience in medical contexts where pain is downplayed or brushed off as psychosomatic, and where the antiquated trope of 'the hysterical woman' is perpetuated in modern-day diagnoses.
There is no place for excruciating pain and discomfort in a woman's ascribed happy-go-lucky world.
